The home side particularly in the first half produced a convincing display, in what was almost a statement announcing normal service had resumed following the disappointment of defeat on the opening Saturday of the new season.

The opening minutes brought non-stop action but Sheffield United kept numbers in deep positions. Even after the game's opening goal, the visitors weren't about to collapse and they mounted a spirited response.

But Dimitar Berbatov shone brightest in the opening 20 minutes, he linked up with and brought into play his teammates.

They included Aaron Lennon who was just as impressive every time he gained possession.

United did provide a period of pressure up to the 70th minute mark. Then Jermain Defoe was brought on to replace Jermaine Jenas who received a kick, and Spurs could have gone on to score more goals thereafter.

On turning around defeat on the opening day of the season with a convincing victory in the first game of the season at White Hart Lane, coach Martin Jol said: "I was more than pleased because it was a good performance. We didn't do well against Bolton and everybody wanted to do better. That is what we did."

"We wanted to put Bolton right and from the first whistle we looked for a high tempo and to put them under pressure. We knew they would play five at the back but we had enough space in midfield with two quality players - JJ and Edgar Davids - to keep them under pressure."

Assistant coach Chris Hughton said: "It was an entertaining evening and, clearly, the most important thing for us after Bolton was to bounce back. We set the tempo right from the start and, scoring an early goal gave us a lift and we took it on from there, we managed to sustain the tempo certainly through the first half."

Jermaine Jenas said: "Saturday was tough for us at Bolton so it was good to get back to winning ways."

"We knew Sheffield United would come here and make it difficult for us so we had to get into it quickly and make it hard for them. Not only did we do that, we were brave, got on the ball and created chances."

"The lads were delighted because we've got three points on the board."

Centre-half Michael Dawson, delighted at keeping a clean sheet, said: "I think we needed this performance to put Bolton out of our heads. It was a disappointing opening day performance and that result was awful for us."

"We had to get back to winning ways and we did that. We wanted points on the board for ourselves, the fans and everybody at the club."

Robbie Keane said: "We felt much better about ourselves, we were down after Bolton, but we managed to pick ourselves back up and put in a great performance."

"We never let our heads drop, which we proved capable of doing last season."

Dimitar Berbatov said: "That we played well as a team and won was most important."

"It (a home debut) was fantastic, hard, but I enjoyed the whole game."

On the offensive play, Jol added: "Robbie Keane knew exactly how to play with Berbatov with their three at the back and it was very pleasing for us that the lads did what we wanted and gave the crowd a performance."

"The final score doesn't reflect the game because we could have had three or four."

Keane added: "It certainly was a good night. The football we played at times was exceptional especially in the first half. We showed the way we want to play football and getting the early goal helped us.

"Getting the second one capped it off, although we wanted a few more but it wasn't to be. Overall we were delighted with the performance."

Jenas who scored the second of the night, added: "He (Paddy Kenny in the Sheffield United goal) came out to my feet quickly and kind of made my mind up over what I was going to do. I managed to lift it over him and put it in for my first of the season."

Berbatov who opened his Tottenham account with the game's opening goal, added: "The hard work was done by Aaron and mine was the easy part, I was there to score.

"It was most important for me was to score and I was glad I did it here (at White Hart Lane)."

Hughton added: "Dimitar got his first goal for us in his opening home game, we fully expected him to score early on in his Tottenham career. It didn't matter that it was only a tap in."

Keane added: "It will have done Dimitar's confidence the world of good."

Jenas added: "He's been banging them in in pre-season games and in training so it was nice for him to get one in the league, especially in front our fans at home.

"Aaron Lennon has been on fire for a while now and he did exactly what we wanted from him again. He got wide, got at players, managed an assist and was brilliant."
