Both teams got stuck in from the outset.
At 1-1 both teams had chances to go in ahead at half-time.
Spurs went in search of a two-goal cushion but not once did they overcompensate at the back.
Chelsea went route one in search of a late leveller, a goal might have arrived eventually but not in the four minutes of time added on at the end.
Martin Jol: "It's been a great week for us. We won in Europe to get six points in the group and then beat the champions.
"People have said we've never beaten a top side and that's been a bit annoying but now we've done that and, apart from the first 25 minutes, I think it was a great performance.
"Chelsea scored and then we woke up. We had nothing to lose, kept possession and got them on the break a couple of times. We said before the game that we had to be brave and had to play with confidence and I think we did that in the second half."
"We hadn't beaten Chelsea for years and we needed the points. We didn't start well but we showed great character and resilience. We showed that plenty of times last season but with a different team, different players and we wanted the same habits. That was exactly what we showed so I was very proud afterwards."
"After we went 1-0 down Chelsea had the initiative and they had a spare man in midfield as well, so we changed things around. The lads pulled up their sleeves and said collectively ' we need to get a result today'. The crowd was terrific and we came back and showed real quality as well."
"The only disappointing thing was that we couldn't pressurise the ball when they went down to 10 men but it was so hectic out there and they tried to overload us with four or five players up front. Drogba always looked a threat, Kalou and Robben were dangerous to the final whistle."
"It was a great atmosphere. We played on Thursday, it's not easy when a top side like Chelsea has two days extra rest. We had some tired legs out there, we didn't have a two goal cushion so the lads had to dig in and they fought for their lives."
Michael Dawson: "I had been getting a little bit of stick because it had been a long time since my last goal, it was obviously my first for the club - and what a time to get it. What a feeling too."
"People have believed that I was going to score for while, saying 'I fancy you to score', but no-one actually said it this time. It was a great thrill for me, but what a result for us.
"It was a great ball in from JJ, I got a little flick and then realised from the cheering that it had gone in. I was off celebrating then."
"The manager had kept talking about beating one of the top sides and you could see what it meant to the fans and players.
"In the first 20 minutes we were under quite a bit of pressure and it was a great goal from them. We were disappointed, but we kept going and got our rewards with a great goal from Lenny."
Ledley King: "With not having beaten Chelsea for so long it was nice to get it out of the way, but it was not really about that for a lot of the players we have got at the club."
"A lot of them were not familiar with the record and we saw it as another game against probably the best team in the league at the moment. It was always going to be difficult, you could see that we were up for it and it was a great all-round performance.
"For us it was another game, and we happened to be playing Chelsea. We wanted the points as much as any other league game before. There was extra spice because they are champions and a lot of the players had not even played Chelsea before for Tottenham."
"We were aware of their qualities and we just wanted to put ourselves up against them. I thought we started well then, all of a sudden, they scored a goal. 'Not again' did run through my mind and they had a couple of chances after that. We managed to stay in there, got an equaliser at a really good time and from then on we believed we could win the game."
"It was brilliant and the fans were great from the start of the game. It was what we needed, it made the place somewhere Chelsea did not enjoy coming to. It was made as tough for them off the pitch as we tried to make it on the pitch - I'd say it was a good all-round effort."
Robbie Keane: "I was speaking to Pat Jennings and even he said it was the best atmosphere he's experienced in a long, long time. The crowd was brilliant and made a big difference on Sunday. The game was one of the big highlights of my time here, probably the biggest.
"Against a team of such quality we know it was going to be tough, but I thought we matched them in everything and the effort from the lads was second to none.
"There has of course been a spring in the step of the players since beating the champions in the manner we did and deserving to win the game. To go behind and come back to win showed a lot of character."
