Spurs went at the home team from the very start but they weren't up against amateurs by any stretch of the imagination. Jermain Defoe and Jermaine Jenas were looking lively.

It was Jenas who broke the deadlock on 37 minutes with a fabulous finish from outside the box after some good build up play by Mido and Didier Zokora.

Defoe had a headed effort denied early in the second half.

Paul Robinson and Michael Dawson were performing admirably at the back.

Recognising the need to score Slavia raised the tempo but the introduction of Robbie Keane by Martin Jol effectively worked to lighten any potential threat, and Spurs held on to take an away goal to White Hart Lane in a fortnight.

Martin Jol: "For us of course the result was the main thing. We wanted to score a goal, it was always important to score and that's what we did reasonably early on."

"I think in the first half we controlled the game but we lost a bit of initiative in the second half and we weren't as dominant so we gave away chances.

"They started believing in themselves and they had one or two shots but it was a scrappy game in the second half."

"It was not easy for us because they played a similar system so everybody played against his own man. I felt that, at times, we could have done a bit better. On the other hand, we won 1-0 in Slavia, so it was a good result."

Jermaine Jenas: "The fans were magnificent. From the minute we went out to warm up they were in full voice and it felt like we were at home. It seemed like they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we are pleased to send them home in high spirits."

"It definitely made a difference having thousands of fans behind us, it was great."

"I was happy with the goal. It came across nicely after what was a great run from Didier and it came to me perfectly.

"As soon as I hit it I knew it was going in and the keeper would struggle because it was a skiddy surface. Away from home in Europe I think the lads showed good character."

"We've been kind of up and down so far this season but now we've had a win in Europe."

Michael Dawson: "It was huge for us, to take a goal home was fantastic and we're happy."

"Didier did superbly and laid the ball perfect for JJ. It was a great strike and he was excellent on the night and didn't stop running. That went for the whole team.

"It was a tough game and we knew it would be. They made it hard for us which we expected."

"It was good to get a first half goal and we said at half-time that they would come at us and they certainly did that. We had to be strong and we were.

"The fans were superb and it was a big help for us."

Tom Huddlestone: β€œIt was good for me - especially with us getting the win. The game had more of a tempo than you usually see in European games, especially in a two-leg affair. Both sides pressed and it was similar to a Premiership game.

"The away goal was massive for us, as was the clean sheet.”
