New Tottenham Hotspur boss Martin Jol saw his side ease comfortably past injury ravaged Burnley 3-0 in his first game in charge of the Premiership team.
Former West Ham star Michael Carrick, who was given his first start by Jol, created the opening goal for Irish international Robbie Keane.
The Spurs striker was the only survivor from when these two sides clashed in the same competition two seasons ago in a match in which Keane missed a number of chances as the Premiership club crashed out of the competition.
Burnley's patched up starting eleven was further compromised as utility player Graham Branch was forced to leave the game after feeling unwell prior to kick-off and was replaced by Frenchman Jean Louis Valois, who himself was suffering from injury.
This was tough on the Championship team as either side of the goal the Clarets had created a number of good goalscoring opportunities but were unable to take their chances.
Teenage midfielder Richard Duffy was unable to convert two opportunities both of which were created by the diminutive Clarets striker Robbie Blake.
Blake himself was guilty of a miss just prior to the half-time interval as he seized on an error by England international defender Ledley King, but with only keeper Paul Robinson to beat, he drove wide of the target.
Keane's far-post conversion from Defoe's pass six minutes into the second half killed off any hopes of a Carling Cup comeback by Steve Cotterill's team.
The Spurs strikeforce combined again to great effect on 57 minutes as this time it was Keane's turn to be provider for a classy finish by Defoe, who beat keeper Brian Jensen from 25 yards with Tottenham's 13th goal in the competition so far this season.
