Ivan Campo earned Sammy Lee a stay of execution despite having been ignored by the Bolton Wanderers boss all season.
Campo received a shock call-up when he looked to already have played his final game for the club and the popular midfielder capped a man of the match display with a vital first-half equaliser.
Bolton's point moved them off bottom spot and temporarily lifted the pressure on the under-fire Lee.
But the draw did nothing to suggest Spurs boss Martin Jol is safe from the axe. The Dutchman has the backing of the fans, but his team didn't do him any favours against a Wanderers side racked by internal problems.
Scorer Robbie Keane might have won a disappointing encounter with an 85th minute left-foot shot that was turned aside by Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Steed Malbranque also volleyed fractionally over after the keeper's poor punch and the big Finn saved well from compatriot Teemu Tainio.
Bolton didn't trouble England keeper Paul Robinson in the second half. However, they had legitimate claims for a penalty when Michael Dawson appeared to push Kevin Davies.
Lee's selection of Campo was a huge climbdown. The Spaniard hadn't featured in any squad since a pre-season friendly at Colchester.
And the former Real Madrid star received a welcome befitting a returning hero when introduced before kick-off.
His first touch was a foul, his second a wayward pass but his third was a raking 40-yard ball that picked out Davies.
Davies' cross was missed by Ricardo Rocha but cleared by Dawson at the expense of a corner.
Both teams struggled to find any rhythm in the early stages as fussy referee Andre Marriner did his best to ruin a poor opening.
However, the Londoners looked most likely to breakthrough. Dimitar Berbatov had a volley well saved by Jaaskelainen before Keane pounced for his first Premier League goal of the season.
Didier Zokora's pass beat the offside trap, Jermaine Jenas was denied by Jaaskelainen and Campo's half clearance was fired underneath the Finn by a delighted Keane.
The lead lasted just five minutes and it had to be Campo with the equaliser and it came from the Sam Allardyce set-piece manual.
El-Hadji Diouf's free-kick from wide on the right was headed into the bottom corner by Campo, climbing high above Jenas.
Campo scored against Spurs on the opening day of last season, but this was far more important both individually and for the team.
