Clive Allen's side came from a goal behind to lead Aston Villa 3-1 at the interval. The visitors only managed a consolation effort in the second period.
Allen said: "I thought it was a fantastic game against a strong Aston Villa side after we had already talked about the increased quality of the games.
"The boys worked very, very hard in a resilient fashion to grind out a victory. They have kept bouncing along and got results when sometimes they faced severe tests and they have shown they can handle it."
"We had an excellent game last week in Lens. They came through that and we asked more of them here. I knew Villa would be strong because I saw them a couple of times last season when they ran Manchester United very close."
