It?s that time of the year again. Rumours are beginning to fly around the media, discussing who and what will be moving clubs in the upcoming summer transfer window. One player who will be talked about until midnight on August 31st is the Aston Villa revelation Christian Benteke, who has been linked with moves to numerous clubs, most substantially Tottenham. Here, I take a look at what he could offer the North London club.
Goals. The powerful Belgian has netted an incredible 23 league goals in all competitions for the Villains this year and that, coincidentally, is the statistic that Spurs have been sorely lacking during this campaign. With Jermain Defoe naturally blowing hot and cold ? with a larger portion of cold ? and Adebayor being his usual indifferent self, Spurs have had to rely on the force of Gareth Bale to propel them into the race for 4th. Whilst that has been effective thus far, Tottenham are crying out for a world-class striker whose goals might take them up to the next level ? of title-challengers.
A target man. With midfielders like Mousa Dembele, Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Gylfi Sigurdsson in the Tottenham ranks, they need proper service so that they can get their names on the scoresheet on a regular basis. The 190cm frame of Benteke would be a welcome boost in this task as he could retain possession and bring others into play, something the tiny Defoe and the isolated Adebayor have mostly failed to do this season. Also, he could win headers at set-pieces; that is another area Spurs have struggled in this year.
Passion. Adebayor might be a world-class striker at times but does he look like he actually cares when he is on the football pitch? Benteke looks interested, committed and determined whenever he is on the pitch and he displays immense passion when he finds the net. Tottenham could really do with someone possessing that kind of drive to lead the team forward in attacks.
If Spurs do sign Christian Benteke from Aston Villa this summer, it could well be the best ?20m they ever spend.
