Villas-Boas hopes to end his first full season in charge of an English team by sneaking Spurs in to the top four at Arsenal's expense. After that, the Portuguese will start planning for next season. Spurs failed to land Villas-Boas' top two transfer targets this season - Porto's Joao Moutinho in August and Leandro Damiao of Internacional at the end of the winter transfer window.
During his time as a manager and coach in Italy and Portugal, Villas-Boas became used to the idea of working under a technical director, who deals with several off the pitch issues, leaving the head coach to concentrate on managing the squad. "We have been outlining the route ahead for what we want to do in terms of the club structure," Villas-Boas said.
Franco Baldini has been linked with the role and the Tottenham manager would like to see the position filled by the time the next season begins.
Villas-Boas added: "Hopefully (there will be) the arrival of somebody else in the structure for the recruitment side, a technical director. It is a position I am used to working with and ideally it is someone that will help us to move forward."
The employment of someone to bridge the gap between the coaching staff and board may be viewed with some scepticism by Spurs fans, who will remember the fractious relationship ex-manager Martin Jol endured with former director of football Damien Comolli.
The pair clashed over transfer targets and at his unveiling as Fulham manager, Jol claimed that Comolli came up with the idea of replacing the Dutchman with Juande Ramos - an idea that totally backfired for the north London club.
Villas-Boas does not foresee any problems like that occurring again, though.
"It's not fundamental, but it will help the club moving forward," Villas-Boas added. "It's something that I am used to working with. A number of experiences that we had with Jose (Mourinho) at Inter Milan with (Marco) Branca which was always positive.
"Not only me as a manager but when I was with him so I think it's something that works. Since the first day I told the club that it's somebody who is extremely important in my view to the structure of the club."
