Tottenham in talks with Ajax over Steven Bergwijn sale

Tottenham are in talks with Ajax over the sale of winger Steven Bergwijn, 90min can confirm.

The 24-year-old is keen to leave Spurs after failing to cement a regular place in the first team, and a move back to his native Netherlands has long been mooted.

Bergwijn joined Tottenham from PSV Eindhoven towards the end of the 2020 January transfer window, but it's a switch to bitter Eredivisie rivals Ajax that is now on the cards - with the Dutchman keen to make the move.

90min understands negotiations are ongoing between Tottenham and Ajax, who are prepared to offer him a five-year contract a decade after he left the club's academy to join PSV.

Antonio Conte and Spurs are willing to facilitate an exit after a difficult season saw Bergwijn start just four Premier League games - three of which came under Conte's predecessor, Nuno Espirito Santo.

Listen now to 90min's brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott SaundersGraeme Bailey & Toby Cudworth. This week they discuss whether Sadio Mane will leave Liverpool for Bayern Munich, Manchester United's pursuit of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, Newcastle's plans for Moussa Diaby and Sven Botman & Jorginho's future at Chelsea.

Bergwijn has previously hinted that a move away from Tottenham would be best for his career, telling Dutch publication AD in May: "A starting spot here [at Spurs]? I don't think so to be hones. It's a complicated story for me.

"I don't play much. Ajax could be an option for me, and a return to The Netherlands could be an option for me. The World Cup is coming."

Indeed, Bergwijn's struggles at club level have not transferred over to the international stage, where he has been in terrific goalscoring form.

Bergwijn scored the Netherlands' opening goal in the romping 4-1 win over Belgium in the Nations League on Friday, while he also bagged a brace against Denmark and scored in the 1-1 draw with Germany in March.
