Martin Jol failed to take Matt Taylor on loan from Portsmouth because Pompey were only interested in doing a permanent deal.

Jol also made a £20m bid for Fernando Torres of Atletico Madrid but the player was not interested in the move.

And the ones that didn’t get away: Tottenham turned down two offers from Liverpool and Manchester United who were ready to use Djibril Cisse and Louis Saha respectively in player-plus-cash deals for Jermain Defoe.

Stephen Kelly spent the day talking to West Ham United about a move only to be drafted into the Spurs team to face Fulham last night after the death of Young-Pyo Lee's father.
