Marc Isaacs writes in the Daily Telegraph: ‘Martin Jol knows it will be hard to find a natural replacement for Carrick, Tottenham supporters might have been hoping that summer signing Didier Zokora can step into the holding role. However, Teemu Tainio is emerging as the favourite to partner Jermaine Jenas at the heart of midfield for the opening Premiership game against Bolton.'
Tottenham Hotspur plc has announced Carrick's transfer to Manchester United, valued at up to £18.5 million.
Martin Jol also revealed how Champions League football this season was the one attraction Tottenham couldn't offer the player, despite his part in helping the club qualify for the UEFA Cup. The Spurs boss said: "He said goodbye and that he loved playing for us. Carrick was very happy here but there were little circumstances [why he wanted to go] — maybe one big circumstance. We were a bit stubborn and they compensated us." (The Times)
