Tottenham completed their tour of South Africa with a leisurely 3-0 victory over Orlando Pirates to win the Vodacom Challenge. The goals came in a frantic first 20 minutes that saw Martin Jol's men take their South African opponents apart. After the liveliness of the early stages the match descended into a leisurely pace as Tottenham ensure they left South Africa with their 100 per cent pre-season record firmly intact.
Martin Jol began the game with Darren Bent and Dimitar Berbatov up front, with the latter having recovered from a slight foot injury which prevented him appearing in the previous match against the Pirates. The two strikers then proceeded to ruthlessly dispatch the ball into the South African's net as they demonstrated just how impressive the club's available firepower is.
Bent opened the scoring after forcing a one handed save from Pirates' keeper Francis Chansa. From the resulting corner, whipped in dangerously by Adel Taarabt, the ball fell to Bent again, who made no mistake, smashing the ball off the bar and into the net. Moments later Chimbonda headed narrowly over from another Taarabt corner as Spurs applied the pressure. It was, however, only a temporary reprieve for the South Africans.
Taking advantage of dawdling in the Pirates' defence, Darren Bent won possession, darted past a defending and squared the ball to Berbatov who scored his second pre-season goal with a simple tap in. It was yet another example of the blooming partnership between the two front men.
The Pirates were rocked back and seemed to have few ideas of how to deal with such an onslaught. Wasteful in possession, the ball was given away again for Tottenham's third. Picking up the ball on the left wing, Berbatov threaded a pin point pass through several defenders to the feet of Taarabt, who showed great awareness and technique to back heel the ball to the on running Darren Bent, who beat his man with the drop of a shoulder and calmly slotted the ball past the onrushing Chansa.
Bent was looking sharp and could have had a hattrick just a few minutes later after being put through by Chimbonda, only to be denied by the cross bar after thundering the ball past Chansa again.
The three goal rush had effectively ended the match as a contest and despite a few defensive slip ups, Martin Jol will have every reason to be delighted with the way his team performed. The form of Bent and his budding partnership with Berbatov is more than encouraging and Taarabt, despite his propensity for hanging on to the ball far too long, looks an exciting player for the future. Now Tottenham return to England the first team to take the Vodacom trophy out of Africa.
