Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has said he would not sell Croatia playmaker Luka Modric "for ?100m".Sunday's News of the World reported that Manchester United were planning a ?35m bid for the 25-year-old midfielder as a replacement for Paul Scholes.
But Redknapp told BBC Radio 5 live: "If we want to build a club and compete to get in the Champions League every year we have to keep our best players.
"He's such a fantastic player for us. You can't replace people like him."
A key member of the Croatia side that pipped England to Euro 2008 qualification, Modric was signed for ?16.6m from Dynamo Zagreb in April 2008 on the recommendation of former Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli, who is now at Liverpool.
Modric was an influential member of the Tottenham side that qualified for the Champions League for the first time in May.
Operating as an attacking central midfielder this term, he has helped Spurs to fourth in the Premier League and the last 16 of Europe's top club competition.
"He's not just a great player, he's a special person as well," said Redknapp. "He comes in every day and gets on with his job. He never gives you a problem. He's a quiet man off the pitch. He's amazing."
Tottenham face a battle to keep hold of their best players after emerging as a force in European football, with Welsh winger Gareth Bale reportedly a summer target for Inter Milan after his two devastating performances against the Italian champions in the Champions League group stage.
Tottenham's stock rose even further with a 1-0 away victory over AC Milan in the first-leg last 16 tie on Tuesday.
