Spurs are confident of luring Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing this month, who could be one of two new signings still due at White Hart Lane before the transfer window closes.
Acquiring Downing who plays on the left wing would mean having both England wingers at the club.
England Under-19 player Adam Johnson would be a natural replacement in the starting line-up at the Riverside were Downing to depart, and that option might help to smolder any potential retribution amongst Teeside supporters.
If Spurs cannot get their man they may turn to second choice Luis Boa Morte who is currently the club captain at Fulham.
Meanwhile, Martin Jol remains in pursuit of a right full-back and also a striker as back-up for Dimitar Berbatov who is considered a potential 20-goal-a-season Premiership marksmen.
