Spurs attempt to squirm way out of trouble

Tottenham boss Martin Jol all but confirmed rumours the coaching staff blasted the players like never before, following last weekend's performance in the north London derby – and rightly so.

Unfortunately the reaction from the team a few days later has landed the club in hot water. Not only does Didier Zokora begin a three match ban this Saturday, as Spurs take on Charlton Athletic, but the FA have formally charged the club over the incident which involved all ten outfield players.

Jermain Defoe who heard the angry post-match reaction first hand at the Emirates Stadium, despite only coming on in the final ten minutes with his side already 3-0 behind, said: "The manager said he wanted six points from these two games (Middlesbrough on Tuesday, and Charlton this Saturday)."

Boro's George Boateng was red carded along with Zokora in Tottenham's 2-1 win, and both clubs have since been charged by the FA for the scenes which surrounded the incident in the latter stages at White Hart Lane. The trouble appeared to begin after Aaron Lennon showed frustration following a foul against him.

Jol said: "The players were intent on protecting a fellow team-mate."

Meanwhile, skipper Ledley King said: "A lot of the players were merely going over to calm the situation down. That might have made things look worse than they were but no-one was in there to cause trouble, everyone was trying to sort it out."
