The Dutchman said: "Tony Blair arrived and about 30 of us were all standing around like we were in the Army while he spoke with everyone. I talked for 45 minutes with him. We chatted about the World Cup and he said to me: 'I am a big fan of your club.' I told him it is a big burden being a Premiership manager but he has so much more pressure than me it is unbelievable." Later on we went into the dressing-room and I brought up the fact we have a lot of English players and we had a chat about the Newcastle game last week."
Jol, who dropped Edgar Davids from his starting line-up for the first time since returning from a broken leg in February, said: "We lacked that something extra in the dressing-room, in training, and on the pitch without Edgar Davids last year."
After the game Manchester City keeper David James had a laugh about the chants that headed his way from the home fans when he was almost made to pay for the kind of error which earned him the calamity tag. He said: "I don't think Paul (Robinson) would have been singing (‘England's number 5') with the fans when I went for my dribble!"
