After the disappointment of yet more sloppy defending in the last game of the 'old era' comes the confirmation that Leeds United Assistant Manager, Gustavo Poyet, has joined the coaching staff at White Hart Lane. The Uruguayan played 82 games for Tottenham, scoring 18 goals, and joins Marcos Alvarez as one of two first team coaches under new boss Jaunde Ramos. The appiontment of Poyet is aimed to smooth Ramos' transition from Spain to England, with Poyet's role as much about interpreting as coaching.
Ramos was in the stands for the game against Blackburn at White Hart Lane yesterday, and watched as his new side lost out to a last minute Christopher Samba goal after Robbie Keane had put Spurs ahead with a second half penalty. Having been very unlucky to be begged back after a Benni McCarthy shot took a deflection off Michael Dawson, looping over the outstretched hands of Radek Cerny, Tottenham switched off and allowed Blackburn into a game that we had controlled for vast swathes.
As the game represented the last of the old era before Ramos took his first training session this morning, I won't depress myself by focusing on it too much. With the coaching team now in place, and one of Europe's most respected managers at the helm, now is the time to look to the future. A few things I will mention are the performances of Steed Malbranque, who had a good game and will hope to be deployed in a more central role under Ramos, and Tom Huddlestone, who was very disappointing against Blackburn, with his lack of mobility and inexperience shown up as he squandered possession and hacked shots wide of the goal time and time again. Whether he has a future at the club under the new regime only time will tell but he'll have to show more than that if he is to convince Jaunde.
