Murphy: Everything's changed at Spurs

So first things first. Danny Murphy – why did you turn down an offer to play for Spurs in favour of a move to Charlton Athletic just 18 months ago?

Murphy replied: "At the time it just didn't feel right," referring to his thoughts upon meeting up with then-manager Jacques Santini and struggling to communicate with the Frenchman whose poor grip of English put him off plying his trade at White Hart Lane.

"I had a decision to make 18 months ago which was based more on the people who were in charge at the time. I needed some clarity in what the manager wanted from me when I moved from Liverpool.

"I wanted some security and some level of definite attitude that I was going to be playing and would be useful. I didn't have any choice other than the one I made at the time."

Martin Jol managed to convince Murphy that the midfielder has a defined role within the club although most of the talk at the press conference related to his previous detrimental comments about Spurs.

Transfer negotiations between Tottenham and Wayne Bridge fell through because the full back wasn’t guaranteed first team football, so it is unlikely such assurances were made to Murphy on Tuesday.
