The club has won the race for Croatian midfielder Luka Modric. The 22-year-old is one of the most coveted players in Europe and his capture represents a sizeable coup for Juande Ramos and Daniel Levy.
For as long as most supporters can remember the club have lacked a creative central midfielder but Modric fits the bill perfectly. His vision, touch and technique have been instrumental in Croatia's qualification for Euro 2008. With the ability to operate across the midfield he should also provide invaluable versatility.
Modric's capture comes as a massive fillip for Ramos and his side before the end of the season and it is difficult not to be impressed with the efficiency in which the Spaniard has identified his target and, equally, by the rapid response of his chairman. In the past Daniel Levy has been accused of dawdling when it comes to transfers but over recent seasons his ability to capture some of the brightest young talent in the game has been extremely promising.
Another positive aspect of the deal is the price. The BBC have reported a fee of £15.8m which is close to a bargain for one of the most sort after players in the European game. Kevin Keegan had been confident of bringing the player to St James' Park, and clubs like AC Milan and Arsenal were said to be interested The Independent reported several weeks ago that Levy had held talks with Croatia Zagreb and apparently his early interest has done the trick.
The addition of Modric is not expected to be the last piece of transfer business in what promises to be another busy summer at the club. Alongside a host of departing players the club have an ambitious list of targets including Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o, Celtic's Aiden McGeady and Carlos Kameni of Espanyol.
The deal for Modric is subject to a medical and a work-permit being granted, both of which appear to be a formality.
