McClaren gives team north east flavour

England boss Steve McClaren has named Jonathan Woodgate as central defensive partner to Rio Ferdinand, while Kieron Dyer has been preferred to Stewart Downing on the left. Watford's on loan Ben Foster has been given his first chance to play between the sticks.

McClaren said: "I have put Ben into the team purely for experience."

However, Joey Barton was unable to usurp Frank Lampard.

McClaren added: "I was at the Bernabeu the last time we faced Spain (Nov. 04) and we could not get the ball off them.

Shaun Wright-Phillips has replaced Aaron Lennon on the right wing, after the Spurs player was sent home with a stomach bug.

England team to face Spain in the friendly at Old Trafford tomorrow night: Foster; G Neville, Ferdinand, Woodgate, P Neville; Wright-Phillips, Lampard, Carrick, Gerrard, Dyer; Crouch.
