Steve McClaren has explained how Jermain Defoe's inclusion in his first starting line-up as England coach last month was down to the fact he was scoring goals in pre-season, and had shown good attitude while on standby for the World Cup squad.
Defoe had an extended run in the side while Robbie Keane nursed injuries, but since the Republic of Ireland skipper's return, Defoe has only been used as a substitute in Tottenham's last two games.
McClaren said: "Jermain has got the games (at club level) and he proved that against Greece. His performance said why he should be in the team. I have said to the players they have got the shirt and they have got to make sure they keep them.
"I liked how he took the disappointment of the World Cup. I was with him in that period and it was hard for him being on standby and then having to go home.
"But he was professional and worked hard every day to prove a point. He has come back into this squad and it has given him a lift that we had the confidence to actually play him.
