Rigid defence and 'parking the bus' was the Special One's trademark style at Chelsea but last night it was Real Madrid's left back Marcelo who ran the show in attack.
Sent flying: Marcelo (right) is caught by Peter Crouch which led to the Spurs striker being sent-off
This was a break from tradition for Mourinho, who has obviously given his defender full licence to roam up and down the left wing. He looked a little bit like David Luiz charging forwards and was Madrid's most attacking and threatening player.
There's been a lot of talk of Ashley Cole rejoining his old manager at the Bernabeu but I can't see that happening now Cole would be surplus to requirements.
Last night Cristiano Ronaldo kept cutting infield, leaving room on the wing for Marcelo to burst forward into the hole out wide, and Vedran Corluka struggled to pick him up.
It meant Marcelo was acting as an auxiliary winger and always an option as an extra attacker. Madrid even tried long diagonal balls from the right midfield across the huge pitch to pick up Marcelo's runs.
Tracking Marcelo all night exhausted the nine outfield Tottenham players and left holes later in the game which is why they conceded four.
Wrong move: Redknapp might regret starting Bale (right)
Harry Redknapp will probably regret starting Gareth Bale down the right.
Bale was out of the game until Crouch was sent off when he switched to the left. Bale's greatest strength is his devastating pace and his ability to make those high intensity runs again and again so you don't want him cutting back in all the time.
But Bale, only just back in the side, looked spent on the hour mark and should have come off for fresh legs. Lionel Messi plays on the right to great effect but his greatest asset isn't his pace.
Jermaine Jenas should never have been marking Adebayor at the corner when he scored Real's first. While Crouch was on, Adebayor marked him at set pieces and Crouch should have reciprocated. Aaron Lennon surely wasn't supposed to be marking him!
Every time Mourinho joins a club he brings in a player who defines his reign Angel Di Maria looked like that man. When Bale went down hurt, a Spurs player should have put the ball out but Di Maria exploited the nine men on the pitch with a spectacular goal.
Peter Crouch had made more fouls than any player in the Champions League before last night. He's not dirty, but gets penalised for niggly fouls. He is not picked for his ability to close down and the team lost their discipline after he was sent off.
Gunning for goals: Former Gunner Adebayor scored twice against Tottenham
Emmanuel Adebayor looked so driven last night and rose to the occasion. He can sometimes be too interested in showboating and showing off but last night he was clinical and focused. That is the Mourinho effect. He is so athletic and his standing jump for the second goal was like a basketball player in a pair of springy trainers.
The former Arsenal striker's record against Tottenham is amazing 10 goals in 10 games. Adebayor anticipates the movement of the ball so well and gave William Gallas the runaround.
