Hoddle had appeared to give his blessing for the youngster to once again leave the Premiership club on loan, having recently completed a highly-successful spell at Bradford City.
However, Hoddle now seems to have had a change of heart by informing Lions boss Mark McGhee, who has been interested in the former Peterborough man for some time, that Etherington will not be leaving Tottenham on another loan deal.
"We tried to sign Matthew on loan before he went to Bradford," McGhee told TEAMtalk. "We've kept tracks on him and we would love to sign him, but at the moment Glenn (Hoddle) wants to kept him at Spurs so we have to respect that."
Indeed, Etherington was named as a substitute in the Spurs line-up for last night's Worthington Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
