The club is also considering a move to a bigger stadium because of limitations on increasing capacity at White Hart Lane - every seat at home games has been sold so far this season.

Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy told the press last week: "We have the fourth largest supporter base of any English club - it is not just large, it is very loyal."

Levy remained open to suggestions that Tottenham could move into the 70,000-plus Olympic Stadium to be built in Stratford, east London.

"At the moment it is going to be used for athletics (after the 2012 Games) but if that changes, then I am sure they will come and talk to us," he added.

However since Levy made those comments, Sebastian Coe, the chairman of the London 2012 organising committee, played down the suggestions.

"The proposals for a main stadium was a multi-purpose venue with a legacy for track and field athletics at its core," Coe told the Daily Telegraph.
