The five-man midfield in Cardiff at the weekend was crying out for a holding midfielder. If that means moving either Lampard or Gerrard onto the left in place of Saturday’s matchwinner by default Joe Cole, then Eriksson ought to give it a try, but the Spurs player is quietly biding his time.

"The holding role is the type of job I could do for England. It's whether the manager wants to play that way and whether I'm considered the man for the job," he said.
