Ledley King will make no more appearances this season. Having qualified for Europe via the League Cup the club have taken the sensible option of resting him for the six remaining matches of the 2007/08 season.
King has made just four league appearances since last August but remains bullish about his future: "My knee is actually feeling good at the moment and there is no inflammation, but we have to look at the bigger picture and accept that this is an ideal point in time to recover further, get best advice and make sure that I come back fitter," said King.
"They are six games I could well have taken part in, but we all believe this is worth doing for the longer term benefit."
Kings continuing struggle to fully recover from a long term knee injury has raised questions regarding his future in the game. Although stories of his impending retirement are sensationalised Juande Ramos' known interest in centre-backs like Daniel Jarque suggest that he and his backroom staff are not convinced he will ever be able to hold down a regular place in the first team again.
After a dismal performance against Newcastle, Spurs now face a difficult away trip to face Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
Ramos has been handed a boost by the news that Jermaine Jenas, missing with a cold during last Sunday's 4-1 home defeat, is available for selection along with French defender Younes Kaboul.
