Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has spoken of his joy at Niko Kranjcar's impending move from Portsmouth.
Redknapp has been forced into the transfer market after Luka Modric suffered a fractured fibula in Saturday's win over Birmingham.
With little over two days to identify and negotiate a deal for a covering player, unsurprisingly the former Fratton Park boss turned to his ex-club and one of their two remaining star players.
The fee for Kranjcar, who plays for Croatia alongside new team-mates Modric and Vedran Corluka, is believed to be £2.5m, a snip for a player who not so long ago was a £9m target of Arsene Wenger.
It is understood that the Croatian midfielder will under-go a medical at Spurs Lodge this morning to become the latest in a series of players to make the switch from Fratton Park to White Hart Lane.
Speaking to The Sun, Redknapp declared his joy at the move.
He said: “I'm really delighted. I signed him for Portsmouth and he's a fantastic player and a great lad.
“I've already got two fantastic Croatian players – Modric and Corluka – who can help him settle in.”
Although Kranjcar can play on the left hand side of midfield, his arrival does not mark the end of the club's drawn out search for a left footed winger. Like Modric, the 25-year-old right-footed player operates most effectively in a central attack midfielder, and will provide strong competition for places when his compatriot recovers in six weeks time.
Last night The Guardian suggested the impending move will not end Harry's interest in signing Manchester City's Martin Petrov, who is an out and out winger. Petrov has been out of favour under Mark Hughes this season and was reportedly in London yesterday evening.
A deal for a central midfielder may also be in the offing, with Inter's Sulley Muntari and Southampton's French prodigy Morgan Schneirderlin interesting Redknapp.
