Former Tottenhamboss Martin Jol has rejected the chance to hold talks regarding the vacant managerial position at Birmingham. The Blues have been rocked by Steve Bruce's departure to Wigan yesterday and Chairman David Sullivan felt that Jol was the perfect replacement.
"We did speak to Martin over the weekend," said Sullivan.
"Martin thanked us for our interest but said it was too early to consider coming back to football". It is more likely, however, that he is instead holding our for a more prestigiousclub to make an approach, with several teams in Holland thought to be interested in his services.
After three years at White Hart Lane, Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy relieved Jol of his position in October, paving the way for the arrival of Jaunde Ramos. Due to the way the Ductchman conducted himself throughout the chaotic last few months at the club, his reputation hasn't been damaged and Sullivan's offer is proof that he is still held in high regard.
Sullivan confirmed that the search will go on for a manager of Jol's caliber, stating: "Martin is the type of coach we are looking at - someone with a pedigree that will excite supporters," he said.
Undoubtedly Spurs fans will wish Martin a speedy return to work but most will have reservations if he was to join a club in the Premier League as fans would hardly relish the thought of a former favourite coming back to haunt them. It is even thought that Jol has not given up hope of one day returning to Spurs as manager but for now Jaunde Ramos has the job of catapulting the team back up the table, with a tricky match away to West Ham his next challenge.
