"Everyone was despondent after the defeat but we had words in the dressing room," said club captain Ledley King after losing 3-0 in the season's first north London derby, last weekend.

Fortunately, Spurs moved back up into the top half of the table courtesy of their midweek win against Middlesbrough which left Spurs boss Martin Jol to reflect.

He said: "Losing two matches out of 16 hasn't been that bad, but it was the way we lost at Arsenal. What surprised me the most was the way we couldn't get near them or didn't get physical.

"There was an expectation when we went to Arsenal and what happened was disappointing for everybody in that we didn't give them a good game. We didn't play like we were up against our biggest rivals.

"We didn't give the supporters the feeling that we play for them by converting their thoughts and passion for the club into those games.

"We had hundreds of thousands of supporters who were very disappointed and I could feel that.

"We had to be harsh and tell the players they have to do everything in their power to achieve something for Spurs because that is what our supporters deserve.

"In home matches with our crowd lifting us we haven't had that problem, but away from home we've lacked a bit of physical presence. But we have had a few draws, and our strikers have shown recently that they can make the difference.

"It's not been easy with five new players in the side, some who haven't yet got completely used to the English game.

"But our sequence of results over the last couple of months hasn't been too negative.

"We haven't had problems in terms of our league position due to us playing in Europe and the Carling Cup and that has been very positive.

"Charlton (the next opponents at White Hart Lane on Saturday) will have been boosted by their win over Blackburn on Tuesday. Andy Reid has been showing up well for them."
