Jol gets behind his strikeforce

Strikers are not always natural team players although Robbie Keane falls into a different category of forward. Attempts by Martin Jol to convert Jermain Defoe into a similar mould last season didn't exactly go to plan.

Dimitar Berbatov and Mido in particular have both struggled to become more involved in the all round effort of the team this season, particularly away from home in the Premiership, resulting in just two goals from Spurs players – both from the penalty spot.

Jol said: "Robbie picked up an injury in the game against Middlesbrough, which was disappointing as it's meant we've lost an impact player. However, that situation has demonstrated the value of us having four top quality strikers, all of whom contribute different skills to the team game."

"I have always selected my team based on which players I feel were best suited for that particular game and the opposition. I was irritated about the fact my comments (in the press) have been taken completely out of context."
