Jol could be forced to pair Keane and Defoe

Jermain Defoe has started just one of Tottenham’s last eight matches – the defeat at West Brom a week ago. Robbie Keane has been scoring enough to hold onto his place and was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet against Newcastle last Saturday despite putting the ball in the net on three separate occasions.

"I think one or two were onside, but it is a tough job for the assistant. Of course it is disappointing but the most important thing is the win," he said afterwards.

Defoe scored against both Portsmouth and Birmingham at White Hart Lane last month each time after coming off the bench.

Jol, who has yet to settle on his midfield selection told The Sun: "The last couple of times when he came on, he was really on fire. He is probably the only player we have who can really do something out of nothing."

"There is no problem with Jermain not starting games. He will get his matches."

But the Head Coach added in the Independent: "If he is just 80 per cent and not doing well, then we have a problem."

Mido will head out to Egypt tonight and will miss the FA Cup third round meeting with Leicester City on Sunday.

He said: "It is not easy when you travel a lot but I have no choice, I have to be with my country and it is my duty. At the same time I don't want to leave the team here and I will do everything I can in the games I can play."
