Edgar Davids was shifted out into a more left-sided role than he had played in previously for Spurs, to allow Jenas to make his Tottenham debut against Liverpool at White Hart Lane at the weekend. There was also a first Premiership start for Aaron Lennon on the right wing, which Martin Jol had hinted at last week.
Prior to kick-off Jol had also stated that the coaching staffs' prime objective with Jenas is to turn the 22-year-old into the next Steven Gerrard.
"Jermaine is a box-to-box player whereas Gerrard is a player that goes into spaces. His timing is unbelievable. He gets a lot of chances. That is the kind of thing we have to work on with Jermaine. We would like him to dictate the midfield and get as many goals as Gerrard.
"It's very difficult to score from midfield. The only players who are doing that are Gerrard and Frank Lampard. But Jenas is a big talent and he has all the qualities to be a top player. We will develop him like we have Defoe and Carrick," said Jol.
"It's about getting to know new team-mates. The more we get to know each other's game, the better we will become," said Jenas.
