It's all Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle

If you hadn't attended White Hart Lane on Sunday and read the match reports in the written press and seen the feedback on television you would have believed that Spurs' 1-0 win over Newcastle was a total injustice. It was not, it was a hard fought game that either side could have snatched and the thieves on the day happened to be Tottenham. Bobby Robson was livid that his side should have had a penalty, and this coming from the manager of a side that is awarded a great deal of spot-kicks throughout the season. There seems little doubt that it was a penalty but the referee didn't give it and like Gerrard Houllier blaming the referee is merely trying to paper over the cracks of a poor performance.

Newcastle were strong midfield and enjoyed some good possesion but offered little as an attacking force with Shearer and Bellamy well marshalled by Doherty and Gardner. The Magpies' only real shot on goal was the stinging drive from Olivier Bernard in the first half and although Shearer found himself with just Doherty to beat he failed to register a shot, as was the case in the entire game. Spurs however missed good chances through the Doc in the first half and Keane in the second, moments before the goal, while Ledley King twice and Christian Ziege with a free-kickhad good attempts on Shay Given's goal. A draw may well have been the right result but for people to say that Spurs were undeserving victors is false. The fact that Andy O'Brien scored the winner is also irrelevant, it was a lethal cross from Dalmat and had the defender missed it, Robbie Keane would have tapped home. It is not a shame that Newcaslte were robbed, they played their part in a tight game that either side could have won and came out on the losing side.
