Hughton on United and Carrick

A goalless encounter the season before last remembered most for the Pedro Mendes goal that wasn't awarded, and a 1-1 draw, courtesy of a Jermaine Jenas free kick last season ended a long run of league defeats at Old Trafford.

Assistant boss Chris Hughton said: "Michael Carrick was so popular here not just amongst the players but staff as well."

"The thing about United is they haven't changed their style of play in recent years. They experimented with a system where the one of the front players drops into the left to make it a 4-3-3 as such, but it's very much been 4-4-2 and they have been as good as anyone."

"It's always been a difficult place to go but they always looked to play, always looked to attack and on their day they scored goals. But In the last couple of seasons we've put in good displays at Old Trafford."

"On the back of Ruud Van Nistelrooy leaving after all his wonderful goalscoring exploits, United were confident enough in Louis Saha not to bring anyone else in. His United career has been up and down in terms of injuries. He was a very, very good player at Fulham and he's certainly shown the quality he has since then."

"The fact that they haven't bought a major player in up front they're confident in what they've got. Solskjaer has come back, fit and scoring goals. At Charlton they played Ryan Giggs off the front. When Giggs hasn't played off the front, it's generally been him and Ronaldo in the wide areas with Darren Fletcher as well, he's done well for them. He scored at Charlton and has matured. He played well for Scotland this week."
