Hoddle confirms Perry red card appeal

Perry was sent-off by referee Uriah Rennie for a challenge on Middlesbrough striker Szilard Nemeth 'inside' the box and Boro went on to score their second goal from the resulting spot-kick.

"The referee had a key moment in the way the result went. It was never a penalty," Hoddle said after the 5-1 defeat at the Riverside.

"He has got the decision totally wrong. If anything it was a free-kick on the edge of the box.

"We are then 2-0 down and down to 10 men. He has got to use his assistant. There is inconsistency at the moment.

"Some referees don't do anything, some give a yellow card and some are too quick to get the red out.

"As soon as he ran you could tell he was just looking for his red card and when he gave a penalty as well that decision just kills you.

"We will certainly be appealing about it although I don't want to go into detail about that.

"We were totally in control, set out our team to try and win the game and if anyone said we were going to lose 5-1, I would have laughed at them.

"We had chances, didn't take them and then slipped 1-0 behind. In the second half we didn't work hard enough and didn't defend as solidly as I would have liked but the circumstances today, apart from the first goal, were totally out of our hands."
