Spurs look set to continue their summer spending spree after reports claimed that Hertha Berlin have accepted a bid of £5m for midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng. The player, who holds dual German-Ghanaian nationality, has been allowed to discuss terms with the club with a view to becoming Martin Jol's fourth major signing of the summer.
Boateng, whose impoverished upbringing led to his nickname of 'Ghetto-kid', is a pacey and powerful midfielder with a reputation for being outspoken. His creativity and awareness, as well as his form for Hertha, led to him being awarded the 2006 Young Player of the Year award in Germany, as well at the attention of the international coaches of Germany and Ghana. Boateng is believed to favour playing for his country of birth, which is good news if he joins Tottenham, as we won't lose out on his services during the African Cup of Nations.
Boateng's fine form has also attracted the attention of some of Europe's top clubs, with the likes of Sevilla and Newcastle United reportedly interested in his signing. The Spanish UEFA Cup holders were believed to be Boateng's preferred destination but have since refused to meet Berlins asking price. Berlin's General Manager Dieter Hoeness said: "We have agreed a deal with Tottenham.
"Their offer matches our valuation and there is no need for any more negotiations. We have given them permission to talk with Boateng."
It remains to be seen whether this deal will go through but it does seem that Jol is determined to add more dynamism to a midfield. Unfortunately, however, Boateng doesn't represent the left-sided midfielder many of the fans are still waiting for.
