Responding to Arsene Wenger’s decision to field an Arsenal line-up consisting entirely of Jonny-foreigners earlier this week, Graham said, "I do think Arsenal miss a major captain, a John Terry or Tony Adams figure who has come through the ranks."
Adams captained the successful Arsenal side led by Graham in the late 1980s. Terry’s performances for Chelsea this season are likely to earn him a regular place for England alongside Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand starting in the next World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland.
"They do have Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell but it’s not enough," added Graham.
After the club’s 4-2 Premiership defeat at home to rivals United at the beginning of the month, Arsenal have responded well achieving good back-to-back results against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.
However, Wenger’s team selection against the latter signalled to a future without Cole, who is Chelsea-bound this summer. It has also been confirmed that Campbell won’t return from injury in time to face Bayern Munich in the crucial Champions League fixture next week after all. The coach may find himself under pressure to seek out long-term replacements sooner than he had anticipated.
