Tottenham earned a deserved victory over Chelsea in this afternoon's Carling Cup final, securing the club's first piece of silverware since 1999 as Juande Ramos maintained his superb record in knock-out competitions. The Spaniard has now won six trophies in the last 21 months and with this victory, few would bet against him adding to that tally sooner rather than later.
Tottenham's victory, courtesy of a Dimitar Berbatov penalty and a Johnathon Woodgate header, his first for the club, sealed a victory for adventure and positive football during a match which saw Tottenham take the game to their more conservative opponents time and time again.
After dominating the opening exchanges and being unlucky not to be a goal up, the consistently dishonest Didier Drogba put Chelsea 1-0 up from a free-kick that Paul Robinson, who kept his place after a good showing against Slavia Prague, might have done better with. Instead of letting their heads drop, Spurs instead proved that Ramos really has instilled a never-say-die attitude amongst within the squad. As the final whistle blew and the players erupted into joy (and even tears in Robbie Keane's case) Spurs fans were left dreaming of just what the club might achieve with Ramos at the helm. Glory Glory!
Johnathon Woodgate The former Middlesbrough man was superb throughout the match, marshaling Drogba on numerous occasions and his dogged determination and supreme levels of concentration meant he deserved his goal. An absolute snip at the price we paid. Fantastic!
