After Spurs agreed to loan out Calum Davenport immediately after signing the England under 21 defender from Coventry earlier this season, Forest manager Gary Megson may try to persuade Tottenham to let Dawson stay at the City Ground on loan until the end of the season.
The centre-half’s arrival took the number of new players at the club in January to seven, with one other already agreed to join in the summer, making a total of 20 recruits signed since last summer.
Before suffering a series of recent injuries, Dawson was invited by the England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson to train with the full England squad despite only making a handful of club appearances for Forest.
"It was a couple of years ago when I was away with the Under-21s and joined up with the full squad for a training session. In the last couple of years it has quietened down and now Tottenham have come in and given me a chance - I want to grab it with both hands," Dawson told the official site.
Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier had tried to bring Dawson to Anfield and Sir Alex Ferguson also requested to be kept informed of the player’s progress two years ago.
"Michael has obvious playing talents, comprising a leadership quality in his personality," said Tottenham’s director of sport Frank Arnesen.
