Roberts endured a lengthy managerial apprenticeship with clubs such as Yeovil, Enfield, Boreham Wood and Chesham. At Hertford Town, in the Ryman Third Division, his role extended to cutting the pitch, laying out the kit, acting as physio and pumping up the balls before matches. He said: "When I was at Carshalton one of the players didn’t turn up because he was in jail."
Such experiences forced him to move to Spain to run a football academy, before returning to Scotland where after some hospitality work for Rangers, he was given a wages budget of £200,000 to assemble a squad at Clyde last summer.
