However, Hoddle then informed Freund that he had had a change of heart and wanted to keep him for a further year and the player went away for his pre-season break believing his immediate future was at 'The Lane.
But, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has now told him that he can leave and Freund is without a club just weeks before the new Premiership season begins.
I can't understand it," said Freund told BBC Online.
"The manager apologised to me face-to-face and gave me a way back and now he has changed his mind again.
"It was strong for him to apologise. He said 'I made a mistake about you and I realise that I need a player like you - you are a part of my plans next season'.
"But three weeks later he changes his mind and the chairman told me last Thursday that I can go.
"I haven't spoken to him since he apologised. What else can it be but a personal problem?
"In that six months since the manager first told me I could leave I couldn't find anyone who understood why I had to go."
"For me it was important that he apologised as it proved that his decision was not about me not being good enough on the pitch.
"I want the fans to know what has happened and now I will leave Spurs as there is no way back.
"My target is to stay in Premiership. I could go back to Germany but my first choice is to stay in the Premiership.
"My dream was to finish at the top with Spurs but now it will be a different club."
