"But there was none of that. When you are in trouble you see the team spirit but we don't have it at the moment.
The German international is one of several players at The Lane whose contracts are soon due for renewal, but he refused to use this as an excuse for the poor performance at St. Mary's on Saturday.
"I don't think it is because players are worried about their futures," Freund said.
"My contract ends in the summer and so far I've had no talks about my situation with the club. But I don't care about my future when I'm training. I think about it at home but not when I am playing on the pitch.
"I am not surprised the club have not spoken to me about a new deal because I was injured for a long time.
"I have a contract until the summer but when the club is not talking and it is January, then you have to think about your situation.
"I am not 18 any more. I am 33 this month and I know the business. I know what is coming soon.
"But the contract situations cannot be the reason for a performance like the one against Southampton.
"I have spoken to my agent. I have always been honest with my clubs and if I sign for another club, I will tell Tottenham before."
