Spurs have been linked to a summer move for Auxerre trio Younes Kaboul, Kanga Akale and Bakari Sagna after it was reported that Sporting Director Damien Comolli watched the trio against Lyon at the weekend. Akale is an Ivory Coast international striker who has impressed in the last few months and Sagna is a french right footed defender who has represented the French U-21s.
Perhaps most interesting, and indeed credible, is our interest in Younes Kaboul who is regarded by many as one of the top young players in France. Standing at a mighty 190cm (6ft 3'') tall, Kaboul is an imposing defender who can play across the defence but seems most comfortable at centre-back. This suggests that Jol is looking for better quality cover for Ledley King, after the captain's extended period of absence this season. Kaboul has attracted the interest of a large amount of clubs across Europe this season and it is unsurprising that, given Comolli's knowledge of French football, we are interested in this talented defender. According to rumours we have already turned our interest into a firm offer, with reports suggesting the two clubs are close to agreeing a fee of £7.5m for the French U-21 star.
So is it worth risking such a vast sum of money on a talent unproven in the Premiership? It certainly worked with Berbatov but perhaps more relevant is the example of Didier Zokora, who arrived with a big reputation in French football but has struggled to live up to expectations. His first season with the club was undoubtedly affected by the bout of Malaria he contracted whilst on international duty, and the Ivorian has certainly been impressive on occasions, but at times his rash temperament and wayward passing has been a thorn in our side. He has undoubted potential, as his electrifying runs upfield testify, so hopefully he'll prove that he was worth the hefty investment by proving his doubters wrong next season.
So what do you think of the potential arrival of Kaboul? Do you think we need to strengthen the defence or should we be concentrating on other areas such as the left side of midfield? Let us know by voting on our current poll and giving us your opinions on our messageboard.
