Steve McClaren's first England squad is: Paul Robinson, Chris Kirkland, Ben Foster, Gary Neville, Luke Young, Jamie Carragher, Wes Brown, Ashley Cole, Wayne Bridge, Kieran Richardson, John Terry (captain), Rio Ferdinand, Michael Dawson, Aaron Lennon, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Owen Hargreaves, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard (vice captain) Phil Neville, Jermaine Jenas, Stewart Downing, Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Dean Ashton.
McClaren said: "In picking this squad I wanted evolution not revolution. It's the start of a new era. I wanted to start building a squad for the 2008 European Championship and have kept a number of experienced players who I felt can contribute. But I also wanted to add young players into that to give them the opportunity."
"Over the five years I've been involved with the England coaching set-up I've seen first hand the respect that John Terry has among his fellow players. He has also been an inspiration for Chelsea. Steven Gerrard was a strong candidate for the captaincy and I told Steven when I spoke to him today that I'm sure he will also get the chance to lead his country while I'm Head Coach."
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said: "I was always waiting with confidence for Steve McCLaren's decision because I knew Steve was inside and from the inside he could not have thought twice about choosing JT as England captain."
