Aaron Lennon and Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing were both included among the 23 players. Lennon only made his England Under 21 debut this season.
In February 2005 Downing collected his only senior cap to date coming on as a substitute for Shaun Wright-Phillips, whose exclusion yesterday was a slight surprise.
Spurs boss Martin Jol who only signed 19-year-old Lennon from Leeds United last summer told the official Tottenham website, "It was great news for Aaron. He's developed into an exciting talent so quickly."
Sven Goran Eriksson said: "I think during the last two, maybe three months he has really started to play good football. Every time we went to see him, the scouts, myself or Tord, we had good reports during the last two-and-a-half months."
Tony Cascarino wrote in The Times today, ‘If Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney are absent, England would probably play with Peter Crouch as the target man and Joe Cole would roam freely behind him. Stewart Downing or Aaron Lennon would come in on the left wing; or Lennon could play on the right and Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard would move towards the left.'
Paul Robinson is the only Tottenham player guaranteed to start against Paraguay on June 10. Michael Carrick and Jermaine Jenas are both named, and the pair are seen as an alternative to Lampard and Gerrard, although Carrick could also come into a five-man midfield. Ledley King was ruled out through injury.
Jol added: "Michael's had such a fantastic season. I said when I took over that he would be our fifth England squad member and I was proved right. JJ has showed real consistency and he's scored the goals we predicted he would – we asked for six or seven and he did that. He's fulfilled my expectations and what I had in mind from him. It's only because of Ledley's injury that he's not there because he's been outstanding for us but he just got the injury at the wrong time. Robbo was the easy one. I don't really even have to say well done because he's proved he's England's number one."
