Defoe and Johnson are not your typical goal poacher, but both are more than capable of outstripping defenders and hitting the target from long range.
The two goals that produced the 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane on Bank Holiday Tuesday were even virtually identical in their clinical approach.
Defoe's low drive after turning his man on the edge of the box hit the inside of Gabor Kiraly's far post and rebounded in to break the deadlock after 54 minutes.
It was the Tottenham striker's fifth goal in December, and another glorious spectacle that left head coach Martin Jol in a reverie at the striker's potential.
"Jermain scored a trademark goal today. He gets the ball, cuts in and shoots. It's that simple. If he did that from the start of a season he could get 38 League goals," said Jol.
"I think Jermain is capable of scoring in every game. I truly believe 2005 could be a very big year for him," he added.
Before kick-off Defoe walked onto the pitch to receive a supporter's player of the year award. He told the 36,000 home fans gathered that he has no intention of leaving the club in January, contrary to rumours that has linked him with a big money move to Chelsea.
"We don't have to sell, so we won't be selling Jermain Defoe or anyone else," confirmed Jol.
Andy Johnson's equaliser appeared to deceive Paul Robinson eleven minutes from the end as it crept beyond the England goalkeeper had kept four clean sheets in five previous league games.
