A bid for Stewart Downing somewhere close to the £10 million mark may be accepted by Middlesbrough before the transfer window closes, despite Boro boss Gareth Southgate's eagerness to hold onto the 22-year-old.
Employing two wingers in Aaron Lennon on the right and Downing on the left would reduce the need for central midfielders where Spurs already have five or six more than capable players who would then vie for two positions in the middle of the park.
The Riverside club will have to decide whether they turn down further offers from Spurs or allow the England man to head south.
