Dawson missed best England chance

Michael Dawson was an unused substitute for the fourth time since Steve McClaren took charge of the national team.

For a change Paul Robinson provided 90 minutes worth of company on England's bench on Wednesday night. While Robbo sat out to give Ben Foster the opportunity to gain his first cap, the return of Jonathan Woodgate to the international scene against Spain dashed Dawson's hopes of making his own entrance onto the senior stage.

Capped 13 times at Under-21 level, one more than Spurs captain Ledley King, the former Nottingham Forest trainee was on standby for a call-up to England's World Cup squad in Germany last summer, while Woodgate looked back at two unproductive seasons abroad and teammate King recovered from a fractured metatarsal.

Dawson said: "As I've said all along, we're so strong defensively all I can do is keep plugging away but it would be fantastic to win that first cap now."

Spurs go to Sheffield United tomorrow, where Dawson is expected to continue alongside Anthony Gardner, who has got the nod over Ricardo Rocha for the last two games, cup and league defeats at the hands of Arsenal and Manchester United.

"We are all determined to improve our away record and pick up again quickly after last weekend," he added.
