Club announce stadium plans

On the back of a scintillating North London derby, fans were given yet more good news this morning after Daniel Levy announced plans for a new 60,000 capacity stadium.

The ground, to be built near the club's current home - White Hart Lane - will be in the Haringey area, with Levy's announcement also including healthy financial results.

However, the new ground will be named after a sponsor and will not be named after their famous current home.

The development is set to include leisure facilities, public space and housing, with a season ticket waiting list of 20,000 prompting Levy to decide on a solution to an issue which has long hampered the club.

He said: "The scheme includes the current site and adjoining land, with the stadium sited to the north of the existing one."

Levy had considered other sites, including the possibility of ground-sharing with West Ham or Arsenal, or even using the Wembley stadium while White Hart Lane was expanded.

"Following discussions with council bodies, the London Development Agency, Transport for London and local and central government officials, redeveloping the existing site emerged as the most viable route," Levy explained.

With a waiting list for season tickets of over 22,000 and club membership levels of over 70,000, our need for an increased capacity stadium has been clear for all to see for some time."

I am personally delighted that we have been able to put forward a viable option which we know to be the fans' favourite - remaining at the club's spiritual home."

With a planning application to be submitted in 2009, the club's dream of a new ground is still a while of being realised but this, at last, is a step in the right direction.
