England could have done with Defoe's firepower this summer, particularly when they lost Michael Owen to a serious injury in the group stages.
Alan Oliver in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle last night wrote: ‘United have cooled their interest in Defoe, who played under Glenn Roeder at West Ham.'
The Times also picked up on the article this morning.
Oliver added: 'Even though Defoe looks to be well down the pecking order as far as the Spurs strikers is concerned, my view is that he is a bit lightweight and he is a Cockney who may prefer to stay in London.'
‘Berbatov has already dreamed of scoring against Arsenal,' reported Gary Payne in The Sun.
Ledley King and Robbie Keane scored a goal each in the two drawn North London derbies last season.
Payne added: 'The £10.9 million signing plans to become a hero at Spurs by taking next season's Premiership by storm.'
First up, Spurs take on Birmingham City, fresh from relegation at St Andrews this Saturday, and Stevenage at Broadhall Way on Tuesday in two further pre-season friendlies.
Keane said: “Year after year there's been competition here and the strikers have thrived on that - it's kept us on our toes at all times."
